The home stands on the historic site of Minchington Hall, a former country estate that became part of the Brydges estate in 1753 under the Marquess of Carnarvon, later the Earl of Chandos. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the estate when they opened Friern Hospital at Colney Hatch. Although Minchington Hall was demolished in the mid‑1800s, materials were reused to build what is now Minchenden Lodge. The heritage of the estate is still reflected nearby in the Minchenden Oak Garden, home to the remarkable Minchenden Oak, an eight‑hundred‑year‑old tree believed to be one of the oldest in London.

In the early 1970s, the property was converted into a residential care home by Scimitar Care Hotels, making Minchenden Lodge the first recognised Care Hotel in the United Kingdom and a pioneer in the sector. Today, Minchenden Lodge is registered for twenty‑five residents and occupies an enviable position between the old village green and Southgate Underground Station, which is three minutes away on foot. Despite its close proximity to Southgate’s shops and amenities, the home enjoys a serene and secluded setting. Single and double rooms are available on both floors, many with ensuite facilities, and all are bright, comfortable and in keeping with the character of the building.
