Nursing Homes offer a service similar to that of a Care Home with regards to residential care and supports for an individual; however if the needs of the individual require a trained medical nurse to be present during the care or to administer care, support or medicine then a Nursing Home is what is required.
A care home is able to offer personal care services such as assistance with bathing, showing, getting dressed etc. however if an individual require a more dedicated care package such as complex rehabilitation support following surgery or a hospital stay then a Nursing home is the correct path.
Nursing homes offer support in the following circumstances:
- If an individual is very frail or is in a very poor state of health due to age or a medical condition.
- If an individual is unable to administer their own medication and / or unable to feed themselves.
- If in individual requires open wounds to be dressed daily and/or requires assistance with incontinence.
If you are unsure if a nursing home is what you or a loved one requires it is best to contact your local authority and ask them to carry out a Care Needs Assessment, this report will determine the specific requirements of the individual and make recommendation as to what type of care will best serve their needs.
