Housing benefit is designed to support households and individuals on low income to meet their housing and or rental costs. Both employed and unemployed people are eligible to apply for Housing benefits.
There is no set amount for Housing benefits, the amount is based on individual circumstances and whether you rent privately or from a council. There are three other factors which affect the amount of Housing Benefit you will receive: your ‘eligible rent’, if you have a spare room and your household income.
Eligible rent is the reasonable rent for a suitable property in your area, so this varies from county to county. If you live in council or social housing and have 1 spare room your Housing benefit may be reduced by 14%, if you have 2 or more spare rooms your eligible rent may be reduced by 25%. Further information on shared bedrooms is available here.
